Confucianism (Chinese: 儒家, Pinyin Rújiā, lit. "The School of the Scholars"; or, less accurately, 孔教 Kŏng jiào, "The Religion of Confucius") is an East Asian ethical and philosophical system originally developed from the teachings of the early Chinese sage Confucius. It is a complex system of moral, social, political, and religious thought which had tremendous influence on the history of Chinese civilization down to the 21st century. Some have considered it to have been the "state religion" of imperial China, as seen in the nationwide construction of Confucian temples dedicated to the state cult of Confucius.

Confucian art is art inspired by the writings of Confucius, and Confucian teachings. Confucian art originated in China, then spread westwards on the silk road, southward down to southern China and then onto Vietnam, and eastwards through northern China on to Korea. It still maintains a strong influence within Indonesia. Confucian influence on western art has been limited.

• The Master said, "I have been the whole day without eating, and the whole night without sleeping — occupied with thinking. It was of no use. The better plan is to learn." (Analects XV. 30. tr. Legge)
• Zilu (an impetuous disciple of Confucius) asked how one should serve ghosts and spirits. The Master said, "Till you have learnt to serve men, how can you serve ghosts?" Zilu then ventured upon a question about the dead. The Master said, "Till you know about the living, how are you to know about the dead?" (Analects XI. 11. tr. Waley)
• "Show respect to the spirits and deities, then keep away from them." (Confucius is held to have refused to discuss the subject of magic, devils, and Heaven).

Confucius (traditionally September 28 551 BCE–479 BCE) was a famous thinker and social philosopher of China, whose teachings have deeply influenced East Asia for centuries. Living in what is referred to as the Spring and Autumn period (a time when feudal states fought against each other), he was convinced of his ability to restore the world's order, and failed. After much travelling around China to promote his ideas among rulers, he eventually became involved in teaching disciples.
